Birth Story

Waiting game is on

I have been working on the birth of my little munchkin, Baby Ariz and jotting everything down way before I gave birth. I wanted to remember everything as for my future reference in sya Allah.

Here goes nothing.

8/10/2013
I found brownish discharge and however, I have not felt any surges. I started to wear maternity pad. I was scared of having my amniotic fluid leak, so I prepared myself with it. I kept walking the usual distant, try to be active as usual.

9/10/2013
I was busy going to the loo as I felt wet, felt like I was leaking. I checked and checked and I discovered that I have not only brownish discharge but I have also, reddish/pinkish discharge. People around have been telling me that my belly was still high up and I was not going to deliver anytime soon despite all the signs. That particular night, Mr. Afif and I went to see Afnan to pick up our maternity photo shoot pictures in Wondermilk, Damansara Uptown. Throughout the day, I felt the menstrual cramps in my back and lower belly, but it was not that intense and I ignored it. That night, after coming back from the meet up with Afnan, I started to pack the hospital bag for the baby, Mr. Afif and I. Maybe my instinct was saying, the labour was around the corner. I gave kak Nadine an SMS asking her what to do and her advice was, get enough rest as much as I could and eat for energy. She said that the baby is on the way and I would see my little munchkin sooner than I thought.

10/10/2013
That night, I could not sleep very well. I woke up almost every hour, I felt like going to the toilet as I felt like pooping and on top of that, I felt the menstrual cramps more intense than I felt earlier.  I told Mr. Afif that my mom suggested us to go and see the doctor in order to check if everything was alright. Time for break start arrived and I did not have any appetite to eat. But, I ate anyway remembering what kak Nadine had said the day before. I walked as usual towards the office bu that day was a little different. I walked slower than the days before. When I was in the office, I was trembling and I could not really do my work. I felt the surges come and go. I told my boss that I wanted to take half a day off to go and see the doctor. He even told me to go back home but I had to wait for Mr. Afif to come and pick me up. Throughout my half-day of work, I slept and napped whenever I can as I could feel the surges. Like the night before, I still felt like going to the toilet but, nothing came out. Opps TMI!

Around noon, Mr. Afif came and picked me up. We went home and packed some stuff just in case I need to be admitted. After performing Zohor prayers, instead of going straight to the hospital, we went to Paradigm Mall to have lunch. During lunch, the surges came but not that often. So, I told Mr. Afif not to go the hospital. After lunch and bought some baby stuff, we decided to go to TMC. Alhamdulillah, Dr Fidak was in and there was no so many people. Dr Fidak told us that the Baby was engaged but sadly, he was in OP position. She recommended me to be in sujud position when the surges come in order for the baby to be out from the pelvic and reposition himself in OA position.

After the checkup, Mr. Afif and I went to see my girlfriends, Ba, Peii, Alin and Oja in The Good Batch , Caroline's new cafe/restaurant in Damansara Uptown. When I was with them, I did feel the surges but I tried to keep a straight face while holding Mr. Afif's hand. Mr. Afif and I even planned to go to The Curve to watch a movie. But, we ended up not going.

11/10/2013
The day earlier   Dr Fidak gave me a week MC starting on the 10/10/2013 till the 17/10/2013. So, I took the opportunity to clean up the room - swept the floor, wipe the dusts on the dresses, aircond, mirrors and frames. I constantly took breaks in between because I get tired easily. I think the surges came but, I could not feel it as I was concentrating on the cleaning. At around 1pm, Mr. Afif sent me an SMS telling that one of his friends' wife who was pregnant just like me had been admitted to the hospital. Yeay! Maybe that weekend we could visit them and all.

Once I was done cleaning the house, I had my rest in the room and there I could feel the surges more intense. Whenever it comes, I would be either in sujud position, on all 4 as what Dr. Fidak suggested. When the night falls, I started to feel the surges the more and more intense after dinner. Whenever I felt it, Mr. Afif rubbed my back and I even timed the surges.

The surges I had

From it, I concluded that the surges came at the average of 10 minutes apart. I said to Mr. Afif, "I don't think it is going to be tonight and yes, you can go and play futsal. Don't worry too much about me". At about 10.15pm, I was sitting on the Gym ball and I tweeted about it.

The final tweet before the water broke

Once I was then with it, I climbed back on the bed and wanting to go to sleep while watching YouTube. At approximately 10.20pm, I felt another surge and I wanted to sit on the gym ball. Once I got down from the bed, I heard a "POP" sound, my water broke and it gushed out from me. I laughed about it and called Mr. Afif out as he was in the kitchen. I tried to keep calm about it and I wanted to go straight to the toilet to have a warm shower and perform Isyak prayer.

However, I could not even do it. I sat on the toilet bowl as the surges came closer and closer. I could not even stand up and asked Mr. Afif to bring in the gym ball. From the toilet bowl to the shower, it took me approximately 30 to 45 minutes just to move. Once I was done with the shower, I put on my prayer costume and I directly went to sujud position. Oh boy! How soothing was that for me.Yet again, I was either in sujud position or all 4 for 30 minutes. I even laid on my left side and constantly told Mr. Afif that I was so sleepy in between surges and wanting to go to the toilet.

By 11.55pm, I felt the opening and the pushing sensation was there. I told Mr. Afif I think it was timed to go to the hospital.

12/10/13
We left for the hospital at 12.05am  and throughout the journey to the hospital, I kept looking at the clock, timing my surges. It was approximate 5 to 6 minutes apart. When it came, I lay on my side as I sat at the back of the car, while reciting "Allahuakhbar" and humming. Mr. Afif at the same time turn on Surah Maryam on repeat as it calmed me down. I put my trust in Allah's hand and protect us from anything.

After 15 minutes, we arrived at the hospital. Mr. Afif opened the door and the security guard at the hospital offered me a wheel chair. I kindly refused as I remembered that it is better to walk. I walked from the car to the registration counter and at the same time, I could already feel something in between my crotch. I waited for a few minutes before a nurse came to bring me to the labour room and this time, I decided to be on a wheel chair so I can concentrate on the surges.

Once we arrived at the labour room, the nurse asked me to change into a gown and do the business in the toilet. And yes, I really felt like pooping and so, I sat on the toilet bowl. At that moment, my instinct told me to check down there and I was so surprised that I could feel something hairy and round. I told Mr. Afif about it and called the nurse directly. I was directed to the bed and as I sat on the bed and with 2 breaths, little munchkin was out at 12.36am without any doctor to receive him and he cried directly. Alhamdulillah.

I wanted to skin-to-skin with my little munchkin but the nurse sucked out the stuff from the baby's mouth what so ever in front of our eyes and how she handled it was kind of sad. How can she be so rough on him where he should be taken care gently. Mr. Afif was asked to cut the cord and at the same time, he tried to delay the cord clamping. The nurse refused to do so and told us that, we already have waited 30 seconds and asked to us to be fast.

Another nurse offered me ubat kecutkan rahim which was already in her hands but I kindly refused it and told her that I wanted to wait for the doctor to come. While we were waiting for the doctor and I was cuddling my little munchkin, I birthed the placenta at 1.15am. The doctor came 30 minutes after that because she had another mom delivered in Pusrawi and she stitched me up! My goodness the process was longer than the labour!

Alhamdulillah, I had the gentle natural birth without any medical interference however, I was sad that my little munchkin was not received with gentle into this world. Hopefully, it will be better next time in sya allah.
